A Note on the Large Print Edition of Literary Echoes

Literary Echoes: Short Story Analyses, Large Print Edition.

For more than a decade, I read short stories with a pencil in my hand. The notes in the margin, gathered patiently through those years, turned into the two hundred short story analyses that became Literary Echoes: Short Story Analyses. The book was not planned. It grew.

Literary Echoes is a single volume of roughly three hundred and fifty thousand words. It ranges across Chekhov and Tolstoy, Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Shirley Jackson, Tagore, Premchand and Manto, Kipling and Kate Chopin, and writers from across Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is not offered as a canon. It is offered as two hundred doors, each opened far enough that a reader can see there is a room behind it and decide whether to walk in.

The book has been available in Kindle, in Paperback, and in Hardcover since the fourth of July, two thousand and twenty-six. Today I am glad to record that it is now also available in a Large Print Edition on Amazon.

I want to say a few words about why this edition matters to me.

A book of literary analysis asks a great deal of its reader. It asks the reader to sit long with a paragraph, to hold the argument of the essay in one hand while holding the story itself in the other, to move between the two, to disagree, and to disagree again. This work is worth doing. But it should not be work made needlessly harder by the printed page.

Reader after reader has told me, in different words, the same thing. That the paragraph is too dense on the ordinary page. That the line is too long for the eye to track. That the type is too small to sit with for the length of an essay. That the book must be held at arm’s length before the words settle. That there is arthritis in the hand that holds the pencil, and a bigger page would let the reader write in the margins without cramping.

These are not marginal readers. Older readers, low-vision readers, dyslexic readers, and readers with tremor or arthritis together form a large part of the audience for a book like this one, particularly at the level of the sixth form and the undergraduate seminar. To offer them only the standard edition would be to say, in effect, that the book was written for one kind of eye. I did not write it for one kind of eye.

The Large Print Edition of Literary Echoes is set in a face and size chosen to be sat with. The margins are generous. The leading is generous. The paper is comfortable under the palm of the hand. Nothing has been cut. The two hundred analyses are all there, all their live links to the public-domain original texts are still active in the electronic reading, and the print reader can follow the same references at the same depth. Only the physical form has been made kinder.

If you teach IGCSE, AS and A Level, or International Baccalaureate students, or if you are a student preparing for these examinations yourself, the Large Print Edition may be of particular use in the reading room, the study carrel, and the seminar table, where a book meant to be marked and returned to should be as easy on the eye as possible.

The Large Print Edition of Literary Echoes, along with the Paperback and Hardcover editions before it, is available to library wholesalers through Ingram, and librarians whose school, college, university, or public-library acquisitions run through Ingram will find it on the usual purchase order. For any question that Ingram cannot answer at the catalogue level, the publisher may be reached at fizapathan@fizapathanpublishing.com.

The Large Print Edition is available now on Amazon. The Kindle, the Paperback, and the Hardcover editions remain available on the same author page.

For the readers who have written to me about the Kindle edition and asked, as gently as they could, when a large print would come, thank you for asking. This one is for you.
