A learner-controlled accessibility system · Conceived and created by Fiza Pathan, Mumbai, India · UAIE v1.3.0 · Updated June 2026

Introduction

UAIE — the Universal Adaptive Interface Engine — is a learner-controlled accessibility system, conceived and created by award-winning educator Fiza Pathan. Instead of imposing a single “accessible” version on everyone, UAIE hands control to the reader: each person chooses how a page should look, sound, and read. The everyday tools are completely free, need no account, and need no API key. A small number of advanced AI features use your own Anthropic API key, entered once on your own device; UAIE keeps no analytics and sends none of your content to us.

Where to find UAIE

  • On this website — built in. Open it with the “Accessibility” button at the bottom-left of any page.
  • As a browser extension — works on every website you visit. The latest version (v1.3.0) is live now on Mozilla Firefox; the matching Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge updates are awaiting store approval and will follow shortly.
  • On Android — available now on the Amazon Appstore. A Google Play edition is currently in closed testing.

1. Using UAIE on this website

Click the “Accessibility” button at the bottom-left to open the Accessibility Hub. You can switch between an Adult layout and a friendlier Child (ages 8–12) layout at the top. Everything you turn on stays on as you move around the site, and the Esc key closes the panel at any time. The main tools are:

  • My Accessibility Profile — pick a starting point (Visual, Deaf or hard-of-hearing, Dyslexia, Cognitive/ADHD, Motor, or None) and UAIE pre-selects sensible settings you can then fine-tune.
  • Multiple Intelligences — nine learning lenses, including Existential, drawn from Howard Gardner’s framework, to present material in the way that suits you best.
  • Visual Adjustments — Dyslexia Mode (OpenDyslexic font on a cream background), a Reading Ruler that follows your cursor, a Reading Strip, increased text and letter spacing, Focus Mode, and a Low Cognitive Load view.
  • High Contrast and Font Size — Standard, White-on-Black, and Yellow-on-Black themes, with adjustable text size.
  • Colour-Blindness Simulation — preview pages through Protanopia, Deuteranopia, and Tritanopia filters.
  • Neurodivergent Sound Environment — calming background sound (Brown, Pink, or White noise, Focus Beats, Rain, or Lo-fi) with its own volume control.
  • Read Aloud and Motor tools — text-to-speech in a British or American voice, high-visibility focus rings, Dwell-Click, and Voice Navigation (Chrome and Edge) for hands-free use.
  • Braille — download any page as a Grade 2 UEB Braille file (BRF) using the “Braille” button, ready for an embosser or refreshable display.
  • Sign Language — the “BSL/ISL” button opens fingerspelling and links for British, American, and Indian Sign Language.
  • AI Plain Language — Simplify any passage into clearer wording, and Restore it, with no account needed. This feature is powered by Claude and uses your own Anthropic API key.
  • Bloom’s Taxonomy levels — recast text from Level 1 (Remember) up to Level 6 (Create) to match the depth you want.
  • AAC Mode — picture-symbol support with a symbol quick-nav for non-verbal communication.
  • CAST UDL Quick Sets — one-tap bundles for Engagement, Representation, and Action & Expression.
  • DAISY Talking Book — generate a DAISY 2.02 talking-book version of a page for use in DAISY readers.

Keyboard shortcuts: Alt+A (Accessibility panel), Alt+D (Dyslexia Mode), Alt+F (Focus Mode), Alt+L (Read Aloud), Alt+P (Plain Language), Alt+R (Reading Ruler), Alt+S (Sounds), and Esc to close.

2. Using the browser extension

The UAIE browser extension brings the same learner-controlled tools to any website. The latest version (v1.3.0) is live now on Mozilla Firefox; the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge updates are awaiting store approval. Once installed, click the UAIE icon in your browser toolbar to open the panel on whatever page you are reading. Its tools include Cognitive Load reduction, Read Aloud, Grade 2 UEB Braille, Plain Language (Levels 1–2 free; Levels 3–6 with your own Anthropic API key), Multiple Intelligences, a Reading Companion, Live Captions, Sign Language (BSL, ASL, and ISL), Visual Adjustments with Colour-Blindness Simulation, the Neurodivergent Sound Environment, a Reading Ruler, and EPUB 3 export. The interface is available in 31 languages.

3. UAIE on Android

The UAIE Android app is available now on the Amazon Appstore. A Google Play edition is currently in closed testing and will be released more widely once testing is complete.

Privacy and your API key

Almost everything in UAIE runs entirely on your own device and needs no account and no key. Only the advanced AI features — such as Plain Language at the higher levels — call Anthropic’s Claude, and they do so using your own Anthropic API key, which you enter once and which stays on your device. UAIE collects no analytics and sends none of your documents or reading to us or to anyone else.
