World-First Learner-Controlled Accessibility System by Fiza Pathan · Mumbai, India · Version 1.0.2 · April 2026 · Patent Application Pending · Trademark Application Pending ·

Introduction

UAIE™ — Universal Adaptive Interface Engine — is the world’s first learner-controlled accessibility system, conceived and created by award-winning educator Fiza Pathan (Mumbai, India). UAIE exists in two forms:

  • Version A: The Browser Extension — available on the Microsoft Edge Add-ons Store and the Chrome Web Store. It works on every website in your browser.
  • Version B: The Website Plugin — embedded directly into Fiza Pathan’s PGCITE Teaching Portfolio at fizapathansteachingportfolioforpgcite.com. It is activated by the blue Accessibility button on every page of the site.

Both versions share the same core features. This guide covers both. All core features are completely free. No account is required. No API key is required for the main tools.

PART ONE: The Browser Extension (Version A)

The UAIE Browser Extension works on every website — news sites, educational platforms, Wikipedia, government pages, and more. Once installed, it sits in your browser toolbar and is ready whenever you need it.

Step 1: Installation

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to the Microsoft Edge Add-ons Store.
  3. Search for “UAIE Universal Adaptive Interface Engine”.
  4. Click “Get” and then “Add Extension” when prompted.
  5. The UAIE icon will appear in your browser toolbar at the top-right.

Google Chrome

  • Open Google Chrome.
  • Go to the Chrome Web Store.
  • Search for “UAIE Universal Adaptive Interface Engine”.
  • Click “Add to Chrome” and confirm.
  • The UAIE icon will appear in your browser toolbar.

If you do not see the icon, click the puzzle-piece Extensions icon in the toolbar, then pin UAIE to keep it always visible.

Step 2: Opening the UAIE Panel

  1. Visit any website — for example, a news article, a Wikipedia page, or an educational resource.
  2. Look for the blue “Accessibility” button at the bottom-left corner of the page.
  3. Click it. The UAIE panel opens on the left side of the screen.
  4. The panel lists all available features. Scroll down inside the panel to see them all.

The panel does not cover the page’s main content. You can continue reading the website whilst the panel is open.

Step 3: Using Each Feature

1. Reading Companion

What it does: Highlights each word on the page one at a time as it is read aloud. Designed for students with dyslexia, struggling readers, and anyone who benefits from following text word by word.

  1. Click “Start Reading” in the Reading Companion section.
  2. Each word will be highlighted in sequence as the audio plays.
  3. Use the Speed slider to slow down or speed up the reading.
  4. Tick “Show syllable breaks” to see words split into syllables (e.g., in‑ter‑est‑ing).
  5. Click “Stop” at any time.

2. Cognitive Load Indicator

What it does: Analyses the text on the current page and tells you how difficult it is to read, using three measures — the Flesch Reading Ease Score, average Words per Sentence, and percentage of Complex Words.

The indicator displays one of four ratings:

  • Easy — Accessible (score 70 and above)
  • Medium — Moderate (score 50–69)
  • High — Academic (score 30–49)
  • Very High — Specialist (score below 30)

If the rating is High or Very High, the indicator suggests using Plain Language (L2) to simplify the page.

3. Text-to-Speech (TTS)

What it does: Reads the text on the current page aloud in a natural voice. No API key required.

  • Choose your accent: click “British” (GB) or “American” (US).
  • Select a voice from the dropdown list.
  • Adjust the Speed slider.
  • Click “Read Aloud”. The extension will read the page text.
  • Click “Stop” at any time.

The voice list shows voices installed on your computer. Microsoft voices (e.g., Microsoft Ryan, Microsoft Aria) give the most natural results and are available on Windows 11 by default.

4. Braille Download

What it does: Converts the text on the current page into Grade 2 Unified English Braille (UEB) and downloads it as a BRF file for use with a Braille display or Braille embosser. Completely free, instant, and no API key required.

  • Click “Download Braille (.brf)”.
  • The file downloads automatically to your Downloads folder.
  • Open the file in BrailleBlaster, Duxbury, or any BRF-compatible software.
  • The file is named with the current page URL for easy identification.

5. Plain Language

What it does: Simplifies the text on the current page for easier understanding. Levels L1 and L2 are completely free and require no API key.

  • L1 — Key Facts: Extracts and presents only the most important facts from the page.
  • L2 — Plain Language: Rewrites the page text in clear, simple language.
  • L3–L6: Advanced levels using Bloom’s Taxonomy (Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, Create) — these require an Anthropic API key entered in the Settings pop-up.
  • Select your level from the dropdown menu.
  • Click “Simplify This Page”.
  • The page text is replaced with the simplified version.
  • Click “Restore Original” to return the page to its original text at any time.

6. Multiple Intelligences (API Key Required)

What it does: Reformats the page content to match your strongest learning style, based on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences (1983). Requires an Anthropic API key.

Learning styles available: Linguistic (Word Smart), Logical-Mathematical (Number Smart), Visual-Spatial (Picture Smart), Musical (Music Smart), Kinaesthetic (Body Smart), Interpersonal (People Smart), Intrapersonal (Self Smart), Naturalistic (Nature Smart).

  • Select your intelligence type from the dropdown.
  • Click “Reformat for My Intelligence”.
  • The page content has been restructured to suit your learning style.

7. Live Captions (Module N)

What it does: Generates live captions for spoken audio playing on the current page. Useful for videos, podcasts, and live streams, particularly for users with hearing impairment.

  • Enable system captions on your device first (Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Captions).
  • Click “Start Captions” in the UAIE panel.
  • Captions will appear on screen as audio plays.

8. Sign Language

What it does: Provides sign language reference support for BSL (British Sign Language), ASL (American Sign Language), and ISL (Indian Sign Language).

  • Click your preferred sign language: BSL, ASL, or ISL.
  • Type a word into the search box.
  • Click “Look Up” to find the sign for that word.

9. Visual Adjustments

What it does: Adjusts the page’s visual appearance for users with visual impairments, dyslexia, or sensory sensitivities.

  • Dyslexia Font: Applies the OpenDyslexic font across the entire page.
  • Spacing+: Increases letter spacing and line height for easier reading.
  • Focus Mode: Dims all text except the paragraph you are currently reading.
  • High Contrast: Applies a high-contrast black-and-white color scheme to the page.

Click any button to toggle the effect on or off.

Step 4: Changing the Interface Language

  • Click the UAIE icon in your browser toolbar (top-right corner).
  • The UAIE Settings pop-up opens.
  • Find the “Interface Language” dropdown.
  • Select your preferred language: English, हिन्दी (Hindi), मराठी (Marathi), தமிழ் (Tamil), తెలుగు (Telugu), বাংলা (Bengali), ಕನ್ನಡ (Kannada), or संस्कृतम् (Sanskrit).
  • Click “Save Settings”. The entire UAIE panel interface switches to your chosen language.

Step 5: Entering an API Key (Optional)

An Anthropic API key is needed only for Plain Language L3–L6 and Multiple Intelligences. All other features are completely free.

  • Obtain an API key from console.anthropic.com.
  • Click the UAIE icon in your toolbar to open the Settings pop-up.
  • Paste your API key into the “Anthropic API Key” field.
  • Click “Save Settings”.

Your API key is stored only on your own device. It is never sent to Fiza Pathan or any third party. It is transmitted directly from your browser to Anthropic’s servers when you use an API-powered feature.

PART TWO: The Website Plugin (Version B)

The UAIE Website Plugin is embedded into Fiza Pathan’s PGCITE Teaching Portfolio at fizapathansteachingportfolioforpgcite.com. No installation is required. It activates automatically on every page of the site.

Step 1: Opening the UAIE Panel

  • Visit fizapathansteachingportfolioforpgcite.com.
  • On any page, look for the blue “Accessibility” button at the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  • Click it. The UAIE Accessibility Hub panel slides open on the left side.
  • Scroll within the panel to explore all features.

  • Grade 2 UEB Braille Download (.brf)
  • Plain Language (L1–L6)

  • DAISY & Braille Library: Access a growing library of DAISY Digital Talking Book files, BRF Braille files, and ElevenLabs narrated audio for every page on the site. Available from the Accessibility Hub panel.

Step 3: Using Plain Language on the Website

On the portfolio website, Plain Language L1 and L2 are powered by a free built-in engine. No API key is needed. L3–L6 require an Anthropic API key entered in the gear icon settings within the panel.

  • Scroll down in the UAIE panel to the Plain Language section.
  • Select your level: L1 (Key Facts) or L2 (Plain Language) for free.
  • Click “Simplify This Page”.
  • The page text simplifies instantly.
  • Click “Restore Original” to return to the original text.

Step 4: Downloading Braille on the Website

  • Scroll to the Braille Download section in the UAIE panel.
  • Click “Download Braille (.brf)”.
  • The BRF file for the current page downloads automatically.
  • Each file is pre-named with the page title for easy identification.

Step 5: The Neurodivergent Sound Environment

  • Scroll to the Sound Environment section in the UAIE panel.
  • Choose a sound: Brown Noise, Pink Noise, White Noise, Binaural Beats (14Hz Beta), Rain, or Lo-Fi Rhythm.
