This Cookie Policy applies to visitors from every jurisdiction, including the United Kingdom (UK GDPR & PECR), the European Economic Area (EU GDPR & ePrivacy Directive), India (Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and Information Technology Rules, 2021), and the United States (CCPA/CPRA and equivalent state laws).
1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website places on the visitor’s device when the visitor accesses the site. They are used to remember the visitor’s preferences, to keep the visitor signed in across pages, to compile aggregate statistics of site use, and, in some cases, to serve advertisements. This Cookie Policy explains which cookies this site uses, why, and how the visitor may accept, reject, or manage them.
2. Cookies this site sets directly (first-party)
The following cookies are set by this site directly and are strictly necessary for its basic operation. Under UK/EU GDPR and DPDPA 2023 they do not require consent, but their existence is disclosed here for transparency.
- WordPress session and login cookies — set by the WordPress core if the visitor is a registered user logging in. Expire on logout or after 48 hours.
- wordpress_test_cookie — a technical cookie that tests whether the visitor’s browser accepts cookies at all. Expires when the visitor’s browser session ends.
- Comment-author cookies — if the visitor leaves a comment, three cookies (author name, author email, author URL) may be set so that the visitor need not re-enter these details on the next comment. Expire after twelve months. The visitor may decline these at the point of comment.
- Cookie-consent preference cookie — records the visitor’s cookie-consent choice so that the consent banner does not appear on every page. Expires after twelve months.
3. Cookies set by third parties (with the visitor’s consent)
The following cookies are set by third-party services integrated into this site. Under UK/EU GDPR and DPDPA 2023 they require the visitor’s opt-in consent before they may be placed. Consent is obtained via the cookie banner shown on the visitor’s first visit.
- Google Analytics (via Google Site Kit). Compiles aggregate, anonymised statistics of site use (pages viewed, session duration, source of traffic). Cookies: _ga, _gid, _gat. Governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Jetpack Stats (Automattic). Lightweight, aggregate visitor statistics. Cookies: tk_ai, tk_qs. Governed by Automattic’s Privacy Policy.
- Akismet Anti-spam (Automattic). Prevents spam comments. Sets a first-party cookie ak_bmsc when the comment form is submitted. Governed by Automattic’s Privacy Policy.
- Embedded YouTube videos. Where a page embeds a YouTube video, the YouTube player sets its own cookies (VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE, YSC, and others) when the player is loaded. Governed by Google’s Privacy Policy. The publisher uses YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com) where technically possible.
- Gravatar (Automattic). Where comment authors have a Gravatar profile, the Gravatar service may set cookies. Governed by Automattic’s Privacy Policy.
4. UAIE™ does not set cookies
For the avoidance of doubt: the Universal Adaptive Interface Engine (UAIE™) — the accessibility widget that appears at the top of this page and every other page of the site — does not set any cookie of any kind. UAIE stores the visitor’s accessibility preferences exclusively in the browser’s local storage on the visitor’s own device. No UAIE data is transmitted to any server operated by the publisher, and no UAIE data is shared with any third party. This is explained in full at Section 2 of the UAIE Privacy Policy.
5. The visitor’s consent
Strictly-necessary cookies (Section 2) do not require consent and are set automatically when the visitor loads the site. All other cookies (Section 3) require the visitor’s opt-in consent. The visitor may:
- Accept all — permits every cookie disclosed in Section 3 to be set.
- Reject non-essential — permits only strictly-necessary cookies. Third-party cookies will not be set; the site will still function.
- Manage preferences — permits the visitor to accept some categories and reject others (analytics, embedded video, etc.).
Consent may be withdrawn at any time by clearing the visitor’s browser cookies for this site.
6. Browser-level controls
All modern browsers allow the visitor to see which cookies are stored, to delete them individually or in bulk, and to block cookies from specific sites or from third parties. Instructions are published by the browser vendors: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge.
7. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Where the visitor’s browser transmits a Do Not Track (DNT) header or a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, this site treats that signal as an opt-out of all non-essential cookies, and no consent banner will be presented. This position complies with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) and with the European Data Protection Board’s guidance on GDPR.
8. Children
The site is not directed at children under thirteen years of age. No cookie is knowingly set in respect of a visitor known to the publisher to be a child. Compliant with Section 9 of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
9. Changes to this Policy
The publisher may amend this Cookie Policy at any time by publishing an amended version at this URL, updating the effective date at the top. Material amendments will re-prompt the visitor for consent on the next visit.
